Dean Blachford

Tax Lawyer

Dean Blachford is a tax lawyer specializing exclusively in tax dispute resolution and litigation. Over the past decade, he has helped hundreds of individuals and businesses, from across Canada, solve their tax matters with CRA, putting the stress and anxiety behind them.

Dean represents clients with significant tax disputes at the audit, objection, or Tax Court stage. He loves collaborating with CPAs to get the best result possible for their clients.

Dean is frequently cited in media publications, such as Bloomberg and the Toronto Star. He has published articles with the Canadian Tax Foundation and Thomson Reuters. He is on the Programs Committee of the Ottawa Chapter of CPA Ontario. Blachford Tax Law’s annual Tax Dispute Update webinar is attended by hundreds of CPAs across Canada..

He began his career as a lawyer for the judges of the Tax Court of Canada after being selected for the Court’s prestigious clerkship program. This gave him a behind-the-curtains perspective on what it takes to win tax disputes.

Dean graduated from the University of McGill’s Faculty of Law with degrees in common law (LL.B.) and civil law (B.C.L.).

Ella Sui

Law Clerk and Office Controller

Ella Sui is a certified law clerk who has developed expertise in tax disputes, including managing evidence, communicating with the CRA, and making filings to the Tax Court of Canada.

Ella is extremely self-driven and dedicated to the success of our clients. She is the co-owner of her parents’ family restaurant and embodies their work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. Her experience as a business owner helps her empathize with our clients and understand the frustrations they face from their tax disputes.

Ella is fluent in Mandarin and French. She has a bachelor’s degree in English literature from the University of Ottawa and graduated with honors from Algonquin College’s Law Clerk Program.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Dean Blachford frequently presents on tax-related topics to CPA Ottawa, the Canadian Bar Association, the County of Carleton Law Association, Royal LePage Team Realty, and Video Tax News. Each year, he and Ella Sui help organize CPA Ottawa’s Tax Update, which is attended by upwards of 350 Ottawa-based accountants.

Dean has given numerous guest lectures and panel presentations related to tax law at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. He is considered an expert by Taxnet Pro and writes for Thomson Reuters publications.

The 2019 charity softball game organized by Dean and Ella

Dean and Ella organize an annual charity softball game with players from Ottawa’s accounting firms. In 2021, 29 accounting professionals from 16 firms participated. The game has raised funds for the Ottawa Cancer Foundation, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), Open Doors for Lanark Children and Youth, and the Ottawa Humane Society.
